Since this past Tuesday, the Canadian Blood Services have set up base in the Mustang Lounge at the UCC and are welcoming blood donations. When I first heard about this event, I immediately became interested and wanted to know more. Being an organ donor, I thought that donating my blood was just one more thing I could do and, who knows, potentially be a crucial part in saving one’s life. However, before I actually went and donated, I researched more about blood donation in Canada and the Canadian Blood Services for myself in order to be a well-informed donor. I was astounded to find out for that more than 4.5 million people need blood transfusions each year in the United States and Canada alone and that only one pint of blood can save up to three lives. Also, approximately every minute of every day, someone in Canada needs blood. In fact, 52% of Canadians say they, or a family member, have needed blood or blood products for surgery or medical treatment. After reading these facts, any anxiety I had about donating was completely eliminated.
I also got to know more about the Canadian Blood Services. Canadian Blood Services operates Canada’s blood supply, providing a safe, secure, cost-effective, affordable and accessible supply of quality blood, blood products and their alternatives. Working with both provincial/territorial and federal governments, Canadian Blood Services help hospitals improve blood utilization and surveillance.
One of the main reasons why I write these blogs is to keep my readers up to date about what’s happening on campus as well as to inform them about charitable services in which they can get involved. This article is one of the few I have written that falls under that category. Thus, I highly recommend each and every one of you to go to the Mustang Lounger from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. today and donate to an incredible cause. If you an unable to donate today, you can visit their website, https://www.blood.ca/, or call 1-888-236-6283 to find out a clinic near you.
