Pope of the Poor

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day – one of the holiest days on the UWO, if not the Catholic, calendar – we have a pope. And not just any pope, but the first ever from the Americas and from the Southern Hemisphere. If we couldn’t have a Canadian pope (and the candidate seems quite happy not to have been selected), this sounds like the next best thing.

Pope Francis’ first few days have presented a great outlook for his papacy. From an impromptu trip through the streets of Rome – which the people loved, even if his security did not – to an insistence on recognizing the needs of the poor, he’s off to a great start. With a sense of humour – after one boy nodded when Francis asked if he’d been a good boy, the pope replied, “Are you sure?” Like a Santa without a beard, giving hugs to children and cardinals alike. He’s also continuing the “tradition” of posting to Twitter.

After the scandals that have plagued the church in the last few years, hopefully this represents a new beginning.
